NXP and car maker BMW have jointly developed a multifunctional car key which combines the usual car key functions with contactless payment and related solutions; the companies even offer the possibility to purchase public transportation tickets — if transport companies warm to such solutions.
NXP has combined the car key remote control functions with near-field communications (NFC) abilities and a SmartMX security device typically used in chip-equipped credit cards. Thus, the key can be used for the respective applications.

So this is a really interesting idea to use your car key to pay for shopping and for public transportations. And the most interesting part is this statement “”We have seen that mobile handsets are gaining acceptance as ‘electronic purse’, so why should this functionality and security technology not been embedded into a car key?” , why not embedded the car key function into mobile handsets? Is it because safety reason or the risk of losing your mobile phone could also means losing your BMW?
